Join AC Transit as we honor Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15! Did you know this month celebrates the rich histories, diverse cultures, and impactful contributions of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America?
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a full month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. Why September 15? It marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Plus, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18!

The Mexican Independence Day Festival and Car Show

Join the celebration of Mexican Independence Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on B Street in Downtown Hayward. The festival features Mariachi performances, ballet folklorico, a car show, local vendors, and a variety of food and drinks. Latinx Heritage Month Art Showcase Event

Support local Latinx and Hispanic American artists at the Latinx Heritage Month Art Showcase at Studio 11 Gallery. The artwork will explore the history, culture, and contributions of the Latinx community across various mediums. The event will also feature local vendors, music, and refreshments. Head to the Berkeley Public Libraries to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, 2024. This year, the library will showcase the vibrant cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans with five free music and dance events. Calli: The Art of Xicanx Peoples

Visit the Oakland Museum (OMCA) to experience the powerful artworks of "Calli: The Art of Xicanx Peoples" at OMCA, celebrating intergenerational, feminist, queer, and Xicanx-Indigenous stories. Derived from Nahuatl, "Calli" means home, family, and lineage, showcased through diverse mediums like sculpture, painting, and poetry. This exhibit will be available on display until January 26, 2025.
